FAQs
What is the American West Heritage Center?
The American West Heritage Center (AWHC) is a non-profit living history museum located in beautiful Wellsville, UT. The AWHC covers 1820-1920 using four Historic Sites: A Shoshone Encampment, Mountain Man Encampment, Pioneer Settlement, and 1917 Jensen Historic Farm. Beginning in mid-June 2009 AWHC will also interpret the impact the Railroad had in Cache Valley using a train visitors can ride. We also have Festivals, such as Baby Animal Days, and Special Events, such as our Corn Maze. Find out about all the exciting things happening this year by looking at our calendar.
What does the American West Heritage Center have for family reunions and large groups?
Family reunions and groups of all sizes are welcome to all of our activities and events and there are group rates available for any group of 15 or more people. You can come to our Daily Adventures, which include pony and train rides, rent one of our facilities to use for your meal/gathering, stay in our Tipis for an Overnight Adventure, attend Big Horse Adventures, do a service project, go on a Handcart Trek, or utilize our Large Group program. Contact us and we will help you find the program that best suits you needs.
Is lunch available at the American West Heritage Center?
Though we are currently “testing the waters” in this area, we do not have lunch facilities at the American West Heritage Center at this time. However, during our Festivals we have a variety of food vendors. On other days you are more than welcome to bring your own food or to leave for lunch and come back to finish your visit. Cache Valley has many unique restaurants that would enhance your heritage experience.
Are there things to do no matter what time of year I come to the American West Heritage Center?
The Cache Valley Cultural Heritage Museum Exhibit and gift shop are open year round. Every Wednesday at 10:30 throughout the year, we have Story Time free for pre-school aged children. In the summer, we have our Daily Adventures and Summer Camps nearly every day. In the autumn (beginning mid-September), we have our Corn Maze daily and nightly with its many and varied activities. Check out our Calendar for all the exciting Festivals and Special Events throughout the year.
What happened to the Festival of the American West?
The Festival of the American West closed after 35 years in order to make it possible for the American West Heritage Center to serve guests with quality experiences throughout the year rather than simply during the first two weeks of August. Between Story Time for preschoolers, Scout & Youth Days for Scout troups and youth groups, Daily Adventures, seasonal Festivals, Summer Camps for school aged children, Special Events, the Star Party, the Corn Maze, and many, many other activities, there is something going on at the American West Heritage Center nearly every day from Memorial Day to Halloween. The rest of the calendar year is dotted with events for the whole family and every level of interest.
